The Government of Cameroon obtained a loan from the African Development Bank (AfDB) to finance the Study and Preparation Project for a Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Program. The objective of this project is to improve the efficiency of investments in the water supply and sanitation sector through studies, capacity building activities, and the collection and storage of key data for water resource management in Cameroon. This project will also facilitate the mobilization of funds for the construction of the small-scale water supply networks identified in the feasibility studies. Ultimately, the program will contribute to improving access to safe drinking water in the selected communities, ensuring the sustainability and efficient management of water services, and monitoring and evaluating existing and planned water supply infrastructure in rural areas. The project covers the entire territory of Cameroon.
The project implementation process is as follows:
To achieve this objective, the Project has implemented three (03) components, including: Component I « Studies », is intended for the development of the following activities :
development of preliminary technical studies (feasibility studies) for 350 small-scale drinking water supply systems and detailed project designs for 300 small-scale drinking water supply systems in rural areas ;
conducting feasibility studies on the use of solar energy for water supply systems, taking into account climate change and the specific environmental context of Cameroon ;
conducting a study of water resources and establishing a national water information system.
Component II « Institutional support » focuses on strengthening the capacity of national institutions through... :
strengthening the capacity of stakeholders involved in the construction of drinking water supply infrastructure ;
implementation of Total Sanitation Managed by the Community (TSMC);
implementation of a management tool for rural water infrastructure projects, combined with the creation of an inventory of water and sanitation infrastructure in rural areas;
The component III is dedicated to project management.
One of the key activities of the MRU Study Project is the national inventory of rural water supply and sanitation infrastructure, along with the development of a monitoring and management tool for these facilities. The aim of this activity is to obtain reliable data and comprehensive information on access to safe drinking water and sanitation in rural areas of Cameroon, in order to improve governance and management of this sector.
